It’s never early to begin training kids how to cook healthy meals. Not only will cooking skills help them when they launch out on their own as young adults, but children who are well versed in the basics of cooking can prove to be an invaluable help on those days when you are tired or busy.
The trick to successfully teaching kids how to cook is to start with a few basic dishes and gradually show them how to prepare more complex dishes. No meals are easier to prepare than breakfast dishes, so here are a few recipes you can use to help your child learn their way around the kitchen:
Egg in a Hole
This recipe is extremely easy and can be taught to even the youngest of children, as long as they are able to handle basic kitchen items such as spoons and forks. You can customize it to include your child’s favorite type of bread, add spices of your choice, and use butter or other spreads that your child loves. Go for high fiber breads and free-range eggs in order to maximize the nutritional quality of this simple meal.
Ingredients
- Several slices wholegrain bread
- 3-4 eggs
- 1 tbsp. butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Ask your chef-in-training to use the rim of a glass or cup to cut out a hole in the center of the bread slices.
- Melt butter in a skillet set over medium heat, spreading it out so that it evenly coats the pan.
- Place bread slices into the skillet and crack the eggs into the center holes.
- Cook for about 45 seconds or until the eggs are well set and the bread has browned.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper and flip the bread over to cook lightly on the other side.
- Serve hot.
Did you know you can also make egg in the hole using a pizza stone? Instead of using a skillet, simply spray a pizza stone lightly with oil and place the bread and eggs on it. Bake for one minute or until the eggs have set. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
Yogurt Sundaes
With its high levels of calcium and probiotics, yogurt makes for a healthy breakfast. Pairing it with fruits, nuts, and berries also adds vitamins, anti-oxidants, and healthy fats. On top of all this, it is a tasty breakfast that is easy to make anytime. Have kids select their favorite yogurt flavor and top it with fruits, cereal and nuts of their choice.
Ingredients
- 2 cups fat free yogurt in various flavors
- 1 cup berries
- 2 tbsp. granola
- 2 tbsp. nuts, chopped
Instructions
- Have your child spoon out a quarter cup of yogurt into sundae glasses.
- Top with nuts and granola. Repeat layers of yogurt, granola, and nuts, topping it off with berries.
- Serve immediately.
Oat Waffles
Oats add a chewy texture to traditional waffles, in addition to providing necessary fiber. Little hands can help you mix the waffle dough and assist with pouring into the waffle maker. Serve with maple syrup and berries of your choice.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tbsp. butter, melted
- 2 cups buttermilk.
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
Instructions
- Toast oats lightly in a shallow skillet over medium heat. Allow to cool then grind in a food processor until it achieves powder form.
- Preheat a waffle iron.
- Whisk oat, flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium bowl.
- Beat eggs together with melted butter until well combined. Add buttermilk and whisk until frothy. Have your assistant chef blend wet ingredients into dry ingredients.
- Allow the batter to rest for 5 minutes.
- Ask your assistant chef to ladle the recommended amount of batter onto the waffle iron.
- Close the lid and cook until waffle is browned on both sides.
- Repeat until batter is finished.
- Serve waffles with maple syrup, fruit and/or frozen yogurt.
Breakfast recipes are a great way to introduce children to the wonderful world of cooking. By starting with a few simple dishes, you ensure that your child grasps the basics of meal preparation, and has enough cooking knowledge to advance to complex dishes in good time.
